The glamorous Salma Hayek stuns in the Spring/Summer 2014 issue of NewBeauty magazine, on newsstands April 1. In her cover story, Hayek reveals her personal beauty philosophy, her best food fix, and how her new beauty line, Nuance, will help women maintain the ultimate youthful appearance. Her exclusive shoot for NewBeauty, which shot in Paris, comes out just days before the debut of her new movie, Muppets Most Wanted, and in the same year as her three very-talked about new projects (the much-anticipated book-turned-film, A Three Dog Life, with John Travolta, the politically-charged The Septembers of Shiraz and Everly, an action-thriller set to come out later in the year).

On Anti-Aging

“I have never gotten something done just because it was a trend or the next ‘biggest wonder.’ I tend to stay away from aggressive things. I’ve never even had a peel or microdermabrasion.”

On Her Beauty Philosophy

“Women, by nature, are moody. Once a month, we start freaking out. It’s part of being a woman! Our skin is moody, our hair is moody, we are moody. Don’t be frustrated by it. Listen to it, look after it, but, when it’s not behaving how you want, be prepared for it to happen and don’t do anything too drastic. So many people make beauty decisions in a panic.”

On Her 360 Approach

“I’m not always good about this, but what you eat and what you drink shows up on your skin. If you are too skinny, you mess up your metabolism. Look at those people that you know who have always been too thin their entire lives; look at their skin now! Their skin has aged the fastest.”

On Diet Advice/Wrinkle Fixes

“You must have the minimum level of fat if you are a woman. Not a lot. I confess, sometimes I have had too much of it. But, for the skin, it’s better to have some fat. I am not saying to go out and eat fried food. It’s important to have the right kinds of fat.”

On Her Family

“I have a child and a husband who always need me, and the one thing I can’t do is let myself relax and take time for myself—and I need to fix that. This is my weakness: I feel guilty for taking time for myself. The only place I feel I can do this is when I take a bath or I am in the shower, because no one can find me there.  Sometimes, in the morning, I lay down flat in the shower and let the water rush over me.  Even if you do it for five minutes, it’s really lovely.”

On Having Had Acne

“There were days I used to wake up, look in the mirror and go straight back to bed because my acne was so bad, so I get it. I think adult acne is something that, while it affects a lot of people, most brands still don’t want to give a solution because they think it’s not chic—it’s actually shocking. I think that’s terrible.”

On Her Cosmetics Line, Nuance

“I approve everything in the line. I know every ingredient, and I know every product. This stuff works! I kept thinking someone else was going to find out about this and research it and make a line—but they never did, so I did… Everything I feel that I’ve needed in my life to look good or stay young, everything I’ve wished for, I’ve done in this line.”

On Her Grandmother’s Beauty Influence

“I have my grandmother to thank. She is my inspiration and she taught me many things. She was both an alchemist and a magician and someone with a great imagination—and that’s where I get a lot of my beauty secrets from.”
